Mortality, moral regulation, and (im)moral entrepreneurship in <i>My Favorite Murder</i>

As mediated death has become a staple of contemporary society, debates about the treatment in public domain abound. This article examines true crime comedy podcast My Favorite Murder, arguing that it functions to produce collaboratively ‘provocative morbid space’ which its hosts and audiences can engage contemplating, discussing, negotiating politics murder, victimhood, their surrounding inequalities. Murder explicitly positions itself as provocative morally ambiguous, raising questions who ownership, legitimacy, moral standing when comes discussing death. We argue both reflects fascination with enact socially progressive agenda through controversial entertaining popular cultural engagement sensitive subject murder. With acting what we term ‘(im)moral entrepreneurs’ producing ‘counter (im)moral discourses’, commercially successful offers version ‘cautionary tale’ foregrounds sociocultural inequalities have contributed vast array murders discussed across 300+ existing episodes.
